Zion's Easter Crosses

The display of the three familiar crosses for Easter has been a tradition at Zion Lutheran Church of Silverhill for decades. This is apictorialstory of cross assembly on Good Friday, 9 AM, March 21, 2008, at Zion Lutheran Church. The crosses grace the front of the church for the Easter Season. Click each photo to enlarge.

It is 9:00 AM. Charlie Canning has hauled the wooded pieces from storage for assembly. Pete Midgarden, Steve Vasko, Charlie Canning, and Ernie Burnett (l to r) examine the load.

It is 9:05 AM. Pete Midgarden, on his knees, is searching for the markers to place the crosses in the same holes as last year, a crucial task in order to avoid gas lines and wires buried in the sod. Steve Vasko holding the written directions, Charlie Canning, and Ernie Burnett (l to r) give Pete encouragement.

It is 9:10 AM. Pete Midgarden and Steve Vasko (l to r), tiling shovel and post-hole digger in hand, prepare to dig the mounting holes for the three crosses.

It is 9:15 AM. As Steve Vasko and Pete Midgarden (background, l to r) commence digging, Milt Luoma, Charlie Canning, and Ernie Burnett (foreground, l to r) begin laying out the crosses and preparing for assembly.

It is 9:25 AM. Cross assembly is in process. Pete Midgarden attaches cross piece to upright.

It is 9:35 AM. Assembly is quick with power drivers. Nearly completed assembly is aided by team work. Pete Midgarden and Steve Vasko (l to r) mount the sign "INRI" for the Latin letters of Pilate's proclamation, "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." Ernie Burnett (standing) checks for alignment of pieces.

It is 9:40 AM. Pete Midgarden, Milt Luoma, and Charlie Canning (l to r) carry a cross to its mounting hole in front of Silverhill's Zion Lutheran Church.

It is 9:45 AM. Pete Midgarden, Steve Vasko, Milt Luoma, Ernie Burnett, and Charlie Canning (l to r) adjust the crosses before filling in the mounting holes.

It is about 9:50 AM. Ernie Burnett checks the alignment of the cross in its mounting hole one last time.

It is 9:55 AM. Steve Vasko strengthens a weak cross piece with another screw as, Charlie Canning, Pete Midgarden, Ernie Burnett, and Milt Luoma steady the cross (l to r).

It is 10:00 AM. Charlie Canning places a scarlet cloth on the cross as Ernie Burnett (l to r) checks ascetics.

It is 10:05 AM. Charlie Canning, Steve Vasko, Milt Luoma (on knees), and Ernie Burnett (l to r) clean up and prepare to set a spot light on the crosses for the Easter Season.

As all these events are transpiring, Ralph Utter deals with practical details of church upkeep, weeds in the sidewalk. Ralph's work is assurance that the sidewalk will look nice for Easter Sunday visitors as they pass by the three crosses.
